Used the carburetor drill bits, I'm a believer!

I've always heard guys on here telling people to use the carburetor drill bits to get the secret passages clean. Until today I always thought I could get it "good enough" with sand blasting and soaking, I don't need those fancy drill bits!" Well after fighting a G that would not idle I finally broke down and bought both the #40 and #53 drill bits. I used them tonight and wow that carb was plugged up! I really had to work to get the bits through the rust. After this debacle I will be using the drill bits on every carb rebuild. Thanks to everyone on this site, there is so much valuable info shared on this site!

Just a note for future use...You can get them at fastenal for 1/2 what the carb suppliers get. Also, you need to get a 58 for those little pin ports in the side of the bore right by throttle plate. Sometimes you can get a pin or torch tip cleaner through them but sometimes some will be rusted shut or half way. The 58 will make them the size they need to be whereas just poking a torch tip cleaner through will open them but not to correct size. I have yet to see a 58 available from any carb parts supplier.

I always have to try taking the brass drill plugs out without out heating them first because I'm usually too impatient to get the torch out. Sometimes they come out but when they don't and when I use the heat it always blows me away how easy it is.

Agreed. I drilled my '51B carb when I had to replace the float just as a matter of general principal. I had not thought it had a problem to begin with other than the float.

Although I had been drilling carbs for years, I was still surprised how much better it behaved when finished!
