4020 ring gear

I am wondering if there is an easy way to replace the ring gear on the flywheel on a 4020 John Deere with out splitting the tractor apart? Also the tractor when letting out the clutch sometimes will start bouncing you can push in the clutch again and then release and a lot of times it will be ok. So would that indicate an oil spot on the clutch?

Can't replace the ring gear without splitting it and removing the flywheel. A NEW starter drive may help and working through the starter hole you may could weld up and regrind some bad spots ? Might work ? never tried it ?
A few times I have got lucky with sticky clutches by putting them in high gear engine wide open hold the brakes and let the clutch out seems to burn the oil out and clean up some rust. Try and stop before you smell it burning ! This can warp things if it gets too hot but then you likely might need a new clutch anyhow so your back to where you were ? Might by a little more time ? You might also have a ceramic clutch disk they get pretty grabby when trying to maneuver in close areas.

there is a section of about 5 teeth that are missing and yes the starter gear is also chewed up, so will be replacing both of them. guess I can also look at the clutch while I am in there.

NO you will have to split . Replace the rear main seal while you are there, also the seal on the end of the clutch shaft . Replace the clutch as it will be out . Sounds like you could have a Feramic Clutch Disk, that's all they were good for jumping up and down .Good luck be safe

The extra traction disk for the 4020 is real grabby, it may sound like a good idea, but not worth the extra grabbiness in my opinion.
