Where does it leak?

I have my 1950 B torn down right now and want to make sure I prevent any leaks when she gets her new paint. What are the most common places this tractor is going to leak oil?

Pretty much anywhere there is a gasket. And then there are those dreaded rear axle oil seals.

Remove and clean every gasket,, then use 3M Weather strip adhesive with new gaskets and hardware, one of the problems is that the original bolts were soft, and stretched over time allowing the housings to shift around a bit, if you take your time and do this you will not need a drip pan under it when you show it. I have heard that some people show them "Dry" with no trans oil in them to keep them dry, all they do is load and unload them so they get by, I guess....

On the JD A that I restored, the oil drain plugs in the transmission and engine crankcase leak with Teflon paste on the threads but with Teflon tape, they seal up. As previously mentioned, the infamous rear axle seals, so if the rear cover is off, its a good time to install new seals. Also, when I installed new transmission bearings, flushed out the transmission, and poured in new oil, the joint between the rear end and case which didn't leak before, now leaks. I've given up and lay a couple of cheap cookie sheets under the leaks.

When you tighten a bolt there is a small gap on the back side of the threads. Eventually oil works its way thru and lock washers also leak and gaskets do not seal around the bolt/stud. Two ways to fix thread sealant or put studs everywhere with sealant.

You can control the leaks quit a bit if you remove about a gallon of oil. Still plenty of gear oil in there to do the job. My 2 pennies.

Good question as these tractors started leaking when they rolled out the door at Moline....look at some old adds of them sitting on show room floors wax impregnated paper gaskets...what can one expect....
