volts/cranking

On an electric start tractor with 6V battery, 00 cables & good compression, what should the voltage going to the coil be when cranking the engine with the starter? Can a bad starter connection acting as a resistor (getting hot) reduce the voltage enough to kill the spark?

A bad connection to the starter will not reduce voltage to the coil, but a bad connection before where the power comes off to coil will cause loss of voltage to coil. I am guessing, but would not want to see more than a 1/2 volt drop in voltage at the battery when cranking.

Measure across battery first, then move further down.

Most likely cause is bad battery or poor connections there.

What tractor are you referring to? On an M the battery cable hooks to the starter switch. That feeds everything. You actually need all six volts to get that majic 4 amps across the points. Ain't gonna happen though as there's alway's a drop. Any connection getting hot is telling you there's a problem and yes voltage will drop more with a weaker spark at the end.
