valve timing JD R

Do you have some reason to believe the camshaft is out of time?

Have you verified all timing marks line up?

the camshaft and crankshaft are out of time exhaust valve opening to late engine running poorly, marks line up and camshaft not worn.

So, valves aren't "on the rock" (exhaust finishing closing as intake is started opening) at TDC at the end of the exhaust stroke?

OK, after stopping to think about this, the injection plungers are activated by the cam.

ASSUMING the cam is ground correctly, if cam timing is somehow late (even though the gear timing marks line up) fuel injection is going to be late, as well, likely even even worse problem than late exhaust timing.

IIRC, there's fuel injection timing marks on the flywheel. Tool late to go dig up my shop manual tonight!

here is the situation I am dealing with, removed cylinder head from poorly running model R found sticking valves removed head and injectors, both sent to machine and diesel shop for overhaul. cylinder bores and piston checked and new rings installed at time of assembly tried checking valve timing and found timing late about 15 degrees. removed governor cover and attempted to correct timing with eccentric adjustment unable to bring into proper adjustment, checked flywheel V marks for alignment OK removed timing gear cover to check both set of timing mark for camshaft and gear OK timing gears are not worn excessively and camshaft checked out OK from machine shop. any suggestion would be helpful Thanks

I'm rebuilding an R as well. I'm not to this point, but would like this info as a reference in case I encounter any issues. Did you get the problem resolved?
