John Deere B

Ok Ive put it off long enough I need to take the rock shaft cover off to fix the seals on the rock shaft piston what can I expect when I get in there? It is my fist time in there. I can get most all the parts at Deere still. The reason I need to fix it is the rock shaft wont hold up my 120 corn snapper goes up but creeps back down even with the motor running. The tractor is a 1948 John Deere B thanks for any advise Howard

You don't have to remove the rock shaft housing. Just remove the Powr-trol valve box and then you can remove the piston to replace the leather cup or o-ring and backup washer depending on how your's is set up.

Pete's method will work as long as the gasket between the Cylinder Housing & Rockshaft housing isn't blown out or leaking by.
I have never been that lucky to have it only be the seals on the piston. I would also check cylinder housing ( FLATNESS ) to
rockshaft housing. I've seen some of those distort from hauling heavy load & hitting a bump. On a B model it isn't that bad of a
Job, easier than the later models. Just heavy parts. ( Make yourself some Line up Pins so you can slide the rock shaft onto the
rear axle house, at least one for each side. ) I just slide them back enough to work, lay them down on blocking draw bar height.

If Howard is going to pull the rockshaft housing to replace the cylinder gasket he might as well at the same time replace the 2 pieces of packing on the pto shaft. When worn or torn up they let hyd. oil leak out into the rear end. The packing is key# 52 on page 102 of the PC330 parts book. P/N A2436R, 2 used.

I think if I go all in I might as well replace PTO seal as well how hard is it to get the PTO shaft lined back up when going back together? what can I do to freshin up the power trol? clean all the check valves and replace any seals? I plan on keeping the tractor and want it to work on rock shaft and hydroulic cylinder mode Thanks Howard

It's not hard to get the PTO shaft lined up going back together. Just turn the outboard end of the PTO shaft and it will line up with and slide into the coupling.

When you take off the rockshaft housing, remove the upper left and right cap screws first and replace them with 3/8" x 4" cap screws that you cut the heads off of. They'll serve as line-up pins when you go back together.

The inboard end of the PTO shaft should have a snap ring that needs to be removed before you can pull the shaft out.

Unless you're having other problems beside the leak-down I wouldn't mess with the power-trol. If you feel you need to get into it, get a copy of SM-2011. It's the 2-cyl hydraulics manual and covers operation, trouble shooting and repair. You can probably find it on eBay.

ria i think you miss understood he was not talking pulling the power box he said the rear housing and said how to make aliment pins
