4020 GAS STARTER

Is there a better starter out there for these like the gear reduction starters for the diesels,or will diesel starter work on gas tractor?

There might be some Heavy Duty ones made for them, but this is what I last did on ours. Ours is an early model. I had laying around the shop a 24 volt starter from a diesel industrial model 500 which is a 3020. I had converted this starter in the past to 12 via field coils and a new solenoid. I think armature stayed the same. Anyhow since it was laying around and basically free I checked it out against the old gas starter which was a real mess insides. The starter drive is a different tooth count but I was able to install the gas drive into the diesel starter without issue. Ran it this way for a few years. It always made a weird noise while starting though. I pulled it off last year ? for a look. The old gas drive I had was bad and rubbing the flywheel while cranking. I went and got a NEW gas starter drive put it in and man oh man that thing has NEVER cranked over so good as it does now !
Fuel line may need rerouted ? but mine was modified before so it just clears it.

I was wondering if drives were different all the places i looked at for newer style starter says diesel only

A gasser does not require the fastest possible cranking RPMs. It just has to roll over and have lots of ignition spark. A ultra high power starter drags down system voltage and weakens the spark.

The diesel uses a smaller ring gear on the flywheel so the diesel starter will have different teeth. A good starter shop should be able to build you something. I do agree the starters on the gas do not spin them over fast enough. You could split the tractor and have your flywheel turned down to take a diesel ring gear and then a diesel starter. I did that when changing a 105 combine from gas to diesel. Tom

If you are still using the original Battery set up you will have weak starting. I mounted a 975 cca battery in a custom battery box and my stock starter has no problem cranking my 1966 Gas 4020.

Years ago when I was a parts manager at a Deere dealership it was common practice to replace the gas starter with one from an LP tractor. They are heavier duty and work well. Mike
