In the middle of rebuilding a JD 440IC. Is it possible to put the higher compression late head on an early engine? Does anybody know what the horsepower increase is? I have both a late and early complete engine but the late (original, I think) engine is stuck...the early engine (assuming it is a match to the clutch housing it was bolted to) runs but I was going to re-ring it before I put it in the crawler. I bought the complete crawler and spare engine as a package so I can't be 100% sure of originality......the stuck engine has .040 over pistons in it so I think it will have to be re-sleeved....I can't get the pistons to budge and will probably destroy them getting them out. I haven't removed the cylinder head on the early motor yet. I assume I will be able to see the difference once I do.......?

Didn't know there were different heads ? Is yours gas ? We had a 440IC with a loader. Darn thing had a big problem with run on after being shut off. I had to adjust the idle screw way down and kill it with the throttle first or stall it out. Maybe it had too high of compression ?

(reply to post at 23:18:12 08/07/17There is a free JD parts book on the JD web site to compare early and late ? The late gasser in the 440 iirc had more carburetor , manifolds, ports, compression and rpm.
Is this a fix it right project or just get it running project ?

I bought the crawler to do some work around the homestead. I guess at this time it is more of a get it running project. I have no idea the condition of steering clutches or brakes, etc since it did not run when I purchased. I read on another sight that the late mdels had a higher compression head.....both carbs are TSX 756 marked and I had to buy a new intake/exh manifold anyway. If the hp gain is negligible prob not worth it any way. The price was right and I like projects........I'll check the JD part catalog later I have it downloaded already.
