John Deere H (misc)

Just bought this JD H a short time ago. Haven't bought an owners manual yet. #1. Where do I check the engine oil? #2 Is the choke lever up or down when the choke is on? #3. Is there any place to turn the mag on? #4.Down by the bottom of the flywheel on the side of the trans housing there is a drain of some type. What is this for? Hope to get it running soon with out any major problems. Thank you in advance for your help. Basil

1 - there is a check valve to check the oil on the left hand side, below the fly wheel. Open that up, oil will start to flow out when full.

2- when the lever is "up", the carb is choked. You can see a small line on the lever, I use that to remember when the line is vertical, the choke flap is shut just like inside. Also, on later ones, there is a choke lever that goes back to the dash, which essentially chokes when you pull, which pulls the lever up.

3 - There is not "on" for the mag, unlike earlier tractors like the unstyled D. The mag is "always on" when turning. If you are asking how to turn the tractor "off", there is no way via the mag. You will need to turn the fuel off and wait for it to stop.

4 - I think #1 answers that?

(quoted from post at 19:08:11 08/07/17) Didn't the "choke" position for the choke lever change at SN 27,000?

Oops, my bad. You are indeed correct. I had to go look. Early DLTX 26 carbs (without the choke rod), down is choked. Later DLTX 46 carbs (with the choke rod), up is choked. Either way, both of them have the "line" showing which way the throttle disk is positioned. Vertical is choked, horizontal is not. (red line in this photo)
