4020 LP starting trouble

I'm working on a 4020 LP tractor. The guy I got it from said it only starts one time of day. If you ever kill it , it will not start. He had a bag full of new part he never put on it. Sure enough I crank it , run it about 30 minutes kill it and no start after that. It only turns over. I start looking at it changing the key switch, points and condenser , rotor, cap, coil, plugs and wires all new even a new wiring harness. All theses parts he gave me. Changed the diaphram in the LP regulator. The fuel solinoid is working I hear it click when key is on. Put a rebuilt starter on it turns over fast. Rock the steering wheel when cranking. All that I got it to run great start great no problem about ten starts in a row. Went back about an hour later and it turns over fine but no start. What now?

Trouble shooting is recommended instead of throwing parts at a machine .
Is there spark ? Is there fuel? Is there airflow ? Is the valve lash too tight ?

I have not changed the filter yet that's next. The oil
level is right on in the air cleaner. I took the whole
air cleaner and pipe apart and cleaned it. As far as
throwing parts at it I already had the parts. It seems
to have plenty of fuel.

As was said before, check if it has any spark at the spark plugs when it won't re-start. From the symptoms, it could be the ignition coil is going bad, do you have a known-good coil you can swap in to see if it improves? It wouldn't hurt to re-check over the ignition parts in the distributor as a sanity check: points;, capacitor; rotor; distributor cap. Make sure you have a good spark when it leaves the shed. Now-a-days it's not uncommon to find that a brand new capacitor can be bad right out of the box. Good luck.

Look through the archives on this site, this issue has been discussed many times before with some very good responses and excellent directions for troubleshooting.

When it won't start get someone to give you a pull and see if it will start. Had one in the shop and we could pull it and it would start in ten feet , but wouldn't start with the starter it turned out to be a bad new condenser from John Deere

I put a new coil on it , no change . I am going to be out of town a few days so i took tractor to a retired tractor mechanic to work on .

when it does not start check for good spark first. it must be a good hot spark, not just a little blip. if you have good spark disconnect the fuel line at the tank and let the line bleed out. leave the line disconnected and crank the engine and see if it will try to run. this is the only way to clear out a badly flooded propane engine. if it fires you know you still have a very slow leak at your regulator. you may have to crank the engine a few times if it was badly flooded.
