Gear oil in power clutch 720

A month ago I had gear oil in the power clutch unit. I removed the whole rock shaft housing from the back of the tractor and then I removed the power clutch pump housing. I replaced the one oil seal with two new oil seals that surrounds the pto shaft, as I was told this was probably the problem allowing gear oil into the power clutch.

I put the pump housing back on last night after I coated both sides with High Tack gasket cement. I then put the rock shaft housing back on the tractor and filled the transmission with 89-90 gear oil.

Today when I opened the drain plug for the power clutch housing, about a quart of gear oil came out, so I know it is still seeping into the power clutch unit. I guess I will have to take the rock shaft housing off the tractor again, but this time I don't know what do . can anyone give me some advice or tell what I missed?

IIRC, the two new replacement seals go in back-to-back. (If correct) is that how you installed them?

The bushing in the front goes bad and lets the shaft hang heavy on the seal,,some times the shaft gets worn badly along with the bushing..you going to need to go back in...Darn it.

The seals seemed identical no matter which way I were to install them. The rubber was flat and had no lip, so no matter which way I inserted them seemed the same. Also one side of the seal was open, so I had no where to press against to pound it in, therefore, I installed both with the closed end facing out so I had something to press against. I bought the seals directly from JD.

The seals are direction sensitive,one goes in to hold hydraulic oil back, the other one to hold trans oil forward, if you look at them closely you can see how they are made to 'cup' and trap the oil from one direction.

I think they should have been "open side out"??? Tim's suggestion is a good one- check that the bushing isn't worn badly.

if the open side is suppose to be facing out, how do you pound them in with nothing to push against? With the closed side out I used a socket pressed against the seal as something to pound on;

I think we are thinking the same, but describing it differently :)? I'm thinking one open side towards the transmission, one open side towards the PTO clutch resevoir, with the two flat sides facing one another.

If the seals you got did not have spring loaded lips then I'd surly find some that do. IIRC I was buying them from NAPA ? Maybe this is why I didn't get them from Deere ? Been along time since I have done one.

There are better seals out there than the ones sold by Deere,,,The Deere marketing division is slowly killing the company....It use to be you would go to them for better quality. Google the dimensions and you will find many options and quality's...

How do I find the dimensions of those seals? The parts books does not give any dimensions. Does anyone know what they are and can give me a place to buy better quality seals with the spring?
