Bearing noise

1941 A - would a worn thrust bearing make a clacking noise at idle and go away on acceleration. If so is it an in frame fix. I posted this on the 23rd with some good reply's. Best thing I can come up with is the main bearings on the end of the crank are shot. I have only done minor repairs on this A and it is the only JD on on the place so I am looking for any and all advice on this repair, short cuts----- do's and don'ts.I do have a repair manual but experience is always better.

I don't know if that would cause your noise or not ? Very seldom saw bad main bearings and the thrust can be taken up with the flywheel being slid in to gain .005-.010 crank end play. Check it several spots so it does not have a tight spot. Too tight will cause more problems than too loose. Had a fellow set a late B too tight and it bound up and sheared the key on the crank gear. Since the thrust bearing is on the LH side that is the easiest main to remove. Remove the flywheel, slinger and cover, top engine cover, unhook main bearing oil feed line,if mains are worn unbolt housing and slid it off. Bearing adjusting bolts may need loosened or even removed if it has has a reground undersized crank.

Is the clacking noise coming from the valve cover, as in loose rocker arms. Maybe the righthand camshaft bearing is bad or going out

Well its way aft of the rockers.I will hopefully find out shortly what it is, but its around the crankshaft area. Im going to start at the flywheel like Mike M advised.

Ok Mike thats where I will start. The gentleman I had listen to it is where I came up with the bearings being the noise. He is just one of those guys who is a Jack of all trades and Master of many. Not much he has not worked on, and never has time for his own stuff because he is always fix-en everybody else's stuff. Thanks Ill let ya know I find.

Have had an A with odd clacking noise in the crankcase area, ended up being a worn governor housing. Bearing was loose by the mag and mag drive was supporting governor shaft, moved up and down at an idle Noise went away when throttled up. Next do you hear the noise when the clutch is engaged? If not and your clutch driver is tight on the crank I would suggest the guide pin is worn in the engagement collar.

Very easy to pop off the LH cam bearing cover for a look at the condition of the bearing there too. Well worth a look.

Forgot to mention that I had a G with a clack clack noise turned out to be a cam follower with a worn spot the width of the cam lobe about 50 thou deep. Was a well used tractor but had been completely overhauled. Took it all apart nothing wrong with pistons, crank nothing. Took out cam and followers bingo. Now I start with an empty crankcase when doing an overhaul.
