620 pto will not stop

I bought a 620 recently and the pto will not stop. I have not yet tried to adjust the linkage but will start with that. What am I looking at to fix it? Just need a new brake or will the clutches need replaced as well? How big of a job is it? Tom

G'day Tom,
Don't mean to hijack your thread, but what does " it won't stop" mean to you?
The reason I ask is that my 1070 which I've had for 16 years has a pto that won't stop. It spins slowly whenever the motor is running, but I can stop it with two fingers. Is that similar to what you're experiencing, or are you getting speed and torque at your disengaged pto?

The answer to your question may answer my unasked question... is that normal?

Thanks, Bob

Will not stop means that with linkage off the pto still turns and can not be stopped by hand. I even tried a 2x4 and pried against it and could not stop it. Tom

First try to adjust the brake.

If that doesn't work, it's time to go inside. You may have just a bad brake lining, or there may be something wrong with the clutch plates.

It is kind of a finicky job, but not like changing the PTO brake in a New Generation Power shift :).

Have not yet worked on a powershift but have done plenty of syncro's. Somehow I am not fond of working on two cylinders but every once in a while one follows me home from a sale. This 620 was a non runner with dual hyd's. Sold the dual outlet box and got the tractor running(almost carb still does not suit me). I will run it around for a while then put it on Craigslist. Tom

Tom - here's a video that will give you an idea of what is inside the PTO clutch housing.

you've got an interested situation there....before I dismanted the pto I believe I would try a power test on it....like hook it to a bushog...you'll have to start it obviously with pto engaged and shut down the same way...but it may be worth a try to see if the disks are stuck....without it engaged you should might be able to get it to break loose under load...be sure you have new oil in the unit....now having said that your discs could still have to be replaced if it breaks through but maybe you can get it to engage disengage...you could roll it and start it...disengage the get drive to hill shut down engage gear roll then start tractor...be careful with this procedure but it might work....

When you pull the plug to try the brake adjustment note what the oil looks like in it. There should be 10w oil in there. If it has heavy gear oil in it you need to put a seal in between the pto and transmission.

Thanks for posting that. I watched a few min. of it. It is a bigger job than I thought but with the service book and that to watch it should be doable. Tom
