JD 70 clutch

Clutch does not activate smoothly. When active it "rattles" and tends to jump. I had it all apart this spring and put in all new plates and springs. Will it help if I disassemble and clean the splines ? Can I put a thin coat of grease on the splines?

If your metal plates and clutch cover look shiny like a mirror I hit them with a sandblaster to deglaze them. Makes the clutch work a lot smoother. Sandpaper will help too but is a lot more hand work to clean them up.

Sometimes, the T bolts get small shoulders worn on them, (form the clutch plates) and the clutch will jump as it moves over the small lump. The fix is to replace the T bolts, or take them out and carefully smooth them up, and reinstall. The belview washers also help. Good luck

blksmok, Thanks for the suggestion. Opened clutch cover. no washers. Went to local hdwe store and purched washers. Put back together. clutch operates like it is supposes to operate Thanks.
