JD 950 Charging Issue

BADDBOYY21

I have an early version 950. The battery was overcharging at almost 17 volts when the key was on. It would continue to charge from 16-17 volts all of the time. This would stop with the key off. I have replaced the alternator and voltage regulator and it has not rectified the problem.

Does anyone have an idea what's going on? Could it be the key switch?

Have you checked the voltage with a digital volt meter?

Is it smoking the wiring harness when running?

Is the battery good?

I have seen bad batteries that caused an alternator to charge full-bore....I have seen a bad connection cause a really high voltage reading at the back of an alternator too. Check the voltage across the battery to see if it's actually receiving 17 volts from the alternator

I'm not all that familiar with the wiring on a 950...however from what I've seen and worked on those series the electrical was/is fairly reliable.

I did check the actual voltage at the battery. That's where I come up with the voltage readings. This is from a new battery. Before I knew there
was an issue it over charged the first new battery. It fried it and caused it to swell.

I wonder if there is supposed to be a diode/resistor in the wiring harness or key switch?

I don't think I have a tech manual for the 950 so hate to speculate too much without looking at a schematic.

By process of elimination since you have a new alternator/regulator/battery there must be something wrong in the tractor wiring(or possibly key switch)....maybe a shorted wire grounding out....Bubba overhauled wiring...bad wiring somewhere.

I'll look and see if I have a tech manual for those...I do have a manual for like an 870 series little tractors...but not certain how close those are to the 50 series small tractors?
