John Deere 70 gas

my gear shift handle pulls up out of the top of the trans and it leaks oil out around the shift lever any idea what I need to look at to fix the problem? thanks Howard

The ball and socket assembly that holds the shift lever bolts to the top of the transmission cover. You need to remove the assembly, and study it. From what it sounds like, you may be missing a snap ring off the assembly, that holds the lever to the ball. That would explain the lever lifting out. I would recommend you replace the whole assembly, but that is me.

As for oil leaking out there, it could be a bad ball assembly, but I suggest you look at the transmission oil level as well. It should be to the top of the threads on the fill plug, which is located on the back of the tractor, to the right of the PTO.

James Howell will probably post some nice pictures here of the fill plug, etc. Good luck.

On one of mine the stick would pull out also, I took a washer and tack welded it to the stick where the snap ring went. No more problem. (Do not weld solid only tack weld)

You need the c clip part #B387R. Make sure the edges of the groove it snaps into is not excessively worn and rounded.

Take a look at the photo below of the transmission fill opening.

Agree with [b:654c4848f0]coonie minnie[/b:654c4848f0] that "[i:654c4848f0]It should be to the top of the threads on the fill plug[/i:654c4848f0]".

Hope this helps.

Yep, Mr Howell is the man, he makes things easy enough that I can understand. Thanks for all you do sir!

James Howell has an unbelievable library of JD photos for every repair imaginable.

It almost appears that he runs out and disassembles one of his tractors to get just the right photo for a response to every new question. I know that he doesn't have time to actually do that, but he obviously has had the foresight to document his repairs, and he is very helpful to those of us who "haven't been there yet".

Thank you James!

The photos are taken to help me refresh/remember what has been done on the tractors.

My memory is not what it once was.

Figure might as well take photos because sooner or later someone will have a question.

Also helps me with the routine maintenance.

Always like to help when I can.
