B john deere clutch questions

Iv got a 1950 b john deere that has a rattle in the clutch when it's disengaged. It works fine. Iv tryed to adjust it with no effect. Iv had it apart once and didn't see anything that look bad to me but I'm not sure. It dose have a lot of rust in it I think it had set several years before I got it. Any help would b appreciated. Thanks

If the splines on the driver hub & the floating driver discs are worn a lot, they will rattle when disengaged. When engaged they're all locked together in the clutch pack & it's quiet.

The normal pulsations or changes in crankshaft speed (especially when at idle) cause the floating drivers to flywheel ahead & then get hammered from behind on every power stroke rotation of the crank. That's one reason (there are several) why it's wise to shift them into neutral & then re-engage the clutch when not moving. This is the same thing that happens on foot clutch tractors when you get off of one of them. The diesels are particularly bad about this.

Another reason to do this is because if a chunk of facing breaks free it can essentially put the clutch into a "permanently engaged" state. Even if you're on the tractor when this happens, you may not be able to stop it! Hopefully you'll be able to either shift to neutral or shut the engine off before you run over someone or some thing. While it is rare, it happens! Some on this site have told of it happening to them & may well cite their events.

New (or newer & less worn) parts is about all you can do about it. It's one of those once done, it's done matters.

Thanks. I always put it in neutral and renigage the clutch when I get off. I'm not new to the 2cyl but iv not had one in a while and have forgot a lot of what I knew. I had it apart once bc of a noise before but it turned out out to be the flywheel loose that time. This is a diffrent sound though it was more of a knocking last time, it's a rattle this time. I didn't notice anything wore really bad but there is a lot of rust in everything. Rust dust keep coming out, idk if that related but it seems like it mite be.
