One last reverser question

It depends on what kind of reverser. With all gear reversers, you have to use the engine clutch or they do not last very long. With over-center mechanical clutch reversers -I suppose it is usually better to use the engine clutch simply because it is larger diameter and is more rugged (like in a 440 Deere crawler). In a hydrauic clutched power-shift type reverser - many have no engine clutch (e.g. Deere 1010 and 350). In a machine with an engine clutch and a power-shift type reverser - I'd use the engine clutch to save wear and tear since the rate-of-shift is often kind of harsh in the reverser. That is, unless it is adjustable and known to work well. Reversers in Deere 1010s and 350s have an an adjuster screw to adjust the rate-of-shift.

Use the reverser.
Of course put tractor in neutral weight for a stop or use the brakes then shift the reverser will be better than changing direction at 10MPH.
But I work at a tractor engineering center (not deere), and one guy was spending all day long reversing at full RPM from 18MPH forward to 18MPH reverse. (with the electronics letting the reverser slip enough so the tractor does not stall.
But I am not kidding, all day long...
