JD 5500 tractor

Local dealer has a 1997 JD 5500 tractor on lot. Tach shows 37 hours, apparently rolled back or replaced when motor was replaced. Has 520 loader. Syncro range transmission. Appears clean and straight.

I'm not familiar with this model or series from that time frame. Would appreciate observations and opinions from any of you with relevant experience. Thanks.

Must likely the tach was broken and they replace the cluster. Here is some info. If you buy it make sure you get the parking stands for the loader, sometimes this part is missing.

I know very little about tractors built early 90's. Since Yesterday's Tractors leans more to older tractors you could probably receive more replies at Tractorbynet.com or Greentractortalk.com.

I've got a 5400, MFWD with 540 loader, synchro trans, ~2400 hours. I love the tractor, second best thing I have bought, so, far, after my 2355Narrow. I find the synchro okay with the loader, IF it only did that job, I'm sure the Reverser would be better. I did have the clutch replaced right after I got it, and loaded the rears. While not a Narrow, it will fit between grape rows early in the season when I need to replace posts.

I think a Deere dealer can run a history on the tractor for you, kinda like a CarFax, which will tell you what was done through dealers, and may reveal more about the hours and condition.

That is the first run of the 5000 series tractors to come out of the Augusta, Ga. facility......good tractors. The 520 loader is designed for the smaller tractors, like the 5200, 5300. The 5500 should have a 540 loader (heavier built). If you intend on doing a lot of loader work, the 520 loader will be the weak spot.
