JD 1010 Sleeve Deck

Ready to reinstall the sleeve deck on my 1010 Ag crawler. What is the best way to seal the rubber o rings on the bottom of the sleeves.

NO sealer needs but the area needs to be super clean and use dish soap to lube them when you install the sleeve pack

"To each his own" I guess. 1010/2010 is the only wet-sleeve Deere engine to NOT get updated to three-seals per sleeve. 1010/2010 was one-seal when new, and still is. So I figure it needs all the help it can get. I used red RTV on mine when I had it apart around 20 years ago. Never had an issue since, but I guess that does not prove anything. If I installed with no sealant, it might still be fine.

At the Deere dealership we always used sealer on the sleeve rings on 1010s. Usually non-hardening Permatex. Deere book says you must use sealer on the deck plate gasket but says nothing about those o-rings. I do not use soap on black o-rings. Just the orange ones. Orange sleeve rings are made from a special compound that is designed to swell up when it touches petroleum so soap works well on them and does not make the swell up before you want them too.

I used liquid soap when I installed them. I did not want any type of hardening sealer on the sleeve O-rings. The sleeves will move a little in operation. Trying to "glue" them tight will cause them to fail. I usually used Copper coat on the casket between the block and sleeve deck. I never had one to fail. I have rebuilt several JD sleeve deck motors over the years.

RTV certainly will not glue anything tight. Just as flexible as the black rubber seals from Deere. Just might take up any imperfections that might exist from wear, time, and corrosion.
