4620 thermostart

What is your opinion on installing thermostart plugs in the three intake chambers that go into the head on 4620? We are concerned with heating that up to much with intercooler right above.

One is enough at the air inlet, like brother's MF 8160 has on the SISU engine. Tractors I have them on work well with 14 seconds preheat, then while still on crank the engine drawing in the heated air until the engine starts. Best to have a small reservoir to hold fuel that feeds the thermostart unit, if starved that's what burns them out. Used correctly there will be no trouble even with an intercooler equipped engine.

I have seen a 4020 with 3 thermostarts. My 4020 had only one installed when I got it, and the thermo seemed to never helped much.

On my Massey Harris 55, I installed a Thermostart and it work very well with the updraft manifold. I can see a flame in the manifold if I remove the inlet hose, the manifold gets hot, then it sarts even around 25-30F in few seconds, which is good for a MH 55.

As Dieseltec said, you can just heat so long before you remove all the oxygen around the thermostart. You have to crank some to get more oxygen.

Just seen this post now. Yes the three thermostarts work well, I have done it on a 4620 but you will need three as there is no way to make it work with just one, because of the intercooler
