4020 powershift hydraulic filter question

Ok so I have about completed plumbing for my allied 695 loader on my 1976 4020 powershift. My joystick/spool valve is mounted on my loader and hard plumbed to my loader. I tapped into power under my brake pedals and installed a quick connect, the only thing left is to install my return line. I am either going to put a "t" in the line between my 2 filter covers or use a port on the filter cover. My question is kind of silly but if I buy a ported filter cover or drill and tap/weld fitting which filter cover do I use? the front or rear one? Silly question but I have never thought about it. All the examples I could find were done on a sync shift. Thanks in advance!

I do as Deere did on the industrial models and returned into where a rockshaft return pipe would go in near the filters.

I know I'll get chastised but returning hyd from added hyd valve on a 4020 with Powershift trans isn't near as important as on a Syncro-range trans because PS trans pump never stops pumping as long as engine is running unlike a SR trans pump that stops when clutch pedal is depressed. I think either hyd filter would be fine to return hyd oil. I installed a 158 FEL with factory JS valve on a '68 4020 PS tractor yrs ago dumping hyd oil to sump and loader has never chattered during operation.

I agree with Mike on putting a tee on the rockshaft return. Also makes it easier to change the filter in the future.

yea im still kind of torn. it would take less fittings and I would probably have more room for a quick coupler on a filter cover and the rock shaft elbow that's currently there looks like it might be kind of tight to work on with the filters sandwiching it in but as said it would be a lot more trouble changing filters....hmmmm. so if either filters works that's an idea....I guess you definitely want your fitting on the side of the cover right?

Yes fitting angled on the side is the way JD did it. I uploaded a photo of how a YT member attached hose to filter cover

This looks like its a steel cover, wouldn't think I would try that with a pewter one, not sure what a 67 4020 has one it.
