Wrong polarity OK?

I was looking at a tractor for a friend and it had a negative ground system with coil and ammeter hooked up for negative ground. It still had a generator and he said it charged OK. The starter, of course, doesn't care. Is there anything functionally wrong with this set-up? He said it was that way when he got it.

Just curious, thanks!

Generator can go either polarity. Some regulators are marked "positive ground" some "negative ground" and some "either polarity".

Alternator, unless specially modified must be negative ground.

Tractor does not care about ground polarity if properly configured. It was probably born positive ground simply because the manufacture had to choose between positive or negative. They chose positive, but it has been changed to negative and has been working. Either one will work equally well.

No problems, no smoke, no worry

I'm with Virgil. If the coil and ammeter and battery and charging system (Genny and VR) are all proper correct polarity matched and polarized, and if it all works IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT

Thanks. That's what I thought, but saying I am electrically challenged is like saying the Titanic had a leak. Thanks again!
