Early A main bearings?

I went and looked at and unstyled A last week, the seller thought a '36 but I never looked at the serial number, was a strait old tractor with nice cutoffs, tires were shot and it hasn't run for maybe 3 years. When I grabbed the fly wheel I noticed it had just a little play in and out, maybe a quarter inch or less, seemed like the flywheel and crank and all. Is this main bearings? How involved is the job of replacing em?

End play is controlled by the position of the flywheel on the crank. Should be .005-.010 on later models, not sure on the early ones. There's also a drive pin in the flywheel to engage a spacer behind it. With that much end play it may be out of engagement or broken.

A 1/4" seems a bit excessive. The main bearings do control the trust, but the bearing does not have 1/4" of thrust material on the sides. The flywheel is how the end play is adjusted. What is the position of the flywheel to the end of the crankshaft? Is the crank flush with the flywheel or is the crank shaft sticking out about 3/16" or so? If the crank is flush you can move the flywheel in a bit to take up clearance. If the crankshaft is all ready sticking out a good bit, you will need new bearing. As Mike stated there is a spacer behind the flywheel that needs to be engaged into the pin on the flywheel. Make sure the pin is in the slot on the spacer.
