JD 50 power steering

So I purchased this 1955 model 50 and began digging into it to change fluids and do some other odds and ends and stumbled across a power steering system which was a surprise because I was told it did not have power steering when I bought it so my question is what fluid do I put in it is it just motor oil or is it a hydraulic fluid? And on a different note would the i&t manual for the 50 also cover the lp models?

I&T manual provides enough info to get the user into trouble. Sharps has reproductions and 1-800-522-7448 for nice crisp new manuals. Parts book is free at the JD site.

Be prepared to see that ($7.47/qt.) john deere power steering fluid pooling up on the floor under your front end or maybe it will simply just
disappear. There is a reason you were told it does not have power steering.

I will absolutely get flamed but here goes, I bought my 50 5 years ago and the power steering was none working. After a removing all end play
from the worm shaft and fixing an oil line leak, centering the valve, the power steering works perfect.....with 10w-40 engine oil. I refuse to
pay Deere the high price for their "special" oil. I use my 50 quite often, even take it to the woods, in the winter, for firewood.

I put ATF in one of mine over 30 years ago. I don't use the tractor a lot, but I've never had a problem with it. That was before I knew that Deere had a special fluid I was supposed to use.

(quoted from post at 10:06:11 06/28/17) I was talking to my john deere dealer and they said I could just use a hydraulic oil so im gonna give that a shot

Viscosity cold and hot can make or break the PS system operation.

I used Mobil ATF in my 630 when I re-sealed it in 1976. It still has the same fluid in it. I don't remember ever having to add any. Maybe I should change it? Ha. . .

Got some fluid put in it cranked up the tractor and started turning the wheel and fluid is leaking out from the bottom of the pedestal where the front tire assembly is. would anyone have any idea why it leaks here? could my pressure set screws not be adjusted correctly or do i just need to tear into the lower end of the pedestal and check vanes and seals.

Your problem is not a adjustment. I would suggest purchacing a copy of SM 2050 which is the service manual for the 2 cylinder power steering tractors. The problem seems to be a worn o ring at the bottom of the unit. It was the first piece placed in the unit and now will be the last one removed. There is no magic fix for this problem.
