830 swather

I just purchased an JD 830 swather and all seem to work well except the steering. I have replaced all 4 brake pads. Now I am trying to figure out the steering wheel portion. I have found where the cables,go to a yoke back on the main drive shaft but that yoke does not seem to move very much if at all. If any one has any experience with this system and could explain how that is supposed to work I would really appreciate it.

I sold a JD 830 windrower when they were new but I can't remember how steering wheel controls steering but I think steering cables must attach to steering levers.

Been a few years since I had mine (good day when I got rid of it). Seems to me that the steering wheel doesn't do much, used for small adjustments when in straight lines. Main steering is done with the steering levers. Mine would often have problems with the drive chains, if one side was loose it would tend to steer to one side. Look online in the parts manual it shows a good breakdown of how the steering connects.

If a 830 is the same as a 800(I think they are) you are to steer with the levers. The steering wheel is only for slight direction changes when going down thru the field. You can not come to the end of the field and turn around with the steering wheel.I think the operators manual even says not to turn the steering wheel when the machine is not running.I cut hay for several years with a 800 before buying a discbine. We still have the 800 to swath oats if needed. You need to get a manual if you do not have one. Check Ebay. Tom

Levers are for turns at the end of the row. The steering wheel does the steering via a right pair and left pair of variable pulleys.
Don't let the final drive chains to the wheels get slack and jump off the sprocket .
Take the draper canvases off , cleanup and freeup the lower tenisoners .

Well I seem to have gotten the steering issue worked out can anybody tell me what type of hydraulic fluid goes in the reservoir for the lift on the header.

830 windrower I sold had a header with auger & conditioner rollers

Darn, what was I thinking. The 800 has the drapers for grain or hay. The 830 had the auger platform for just hay.
