272 finish mower

I use my neighbors 272 finish mower and would grease the easily accessible zerks.
Realized there are zerks on the drive shaft and could not get my grease gun to lock on.
Do I have to disconnect the mower to get to them or is there some specific position where I can?
Are they a different size or do I need a special head on the grease gun?
The hose is flexible so access usually isn't so difficult.

The fittings are standard size and a standard coupler in good condition will snap on. There are three fittings on the shaft, one on each u-joint and one to lube the telescoping part of the shaft. The bell on one end of the rotating shield has a hole in it to allow access to the fitting on one joint. That joint can be greased without disconnecting. The bell on the other end does not have an access hole. You will have to disconnect the shaft from the tractor and move the shaft to an angle that will allow access. (I drilled an access hole in that bell on mine for convenience)
The shaft also has to be disconnected to grease the telescoping section. There is an access hole in both the outer and inner tubes of the shield. These holes have to be aligned and then the shaft turned until the holes align with the fitting.
All of this can be done without disconnecting the mower from the tractor but it only takes a minute to disconnect the mower from the tractor and it will make greasing the drive shaft much easier.
