60 won't stop running

I own a 1956 JD model 60 gas tractor. Lately when I try to shut down it diesels (continues running)for several minutes until it finally quits. The oil pressure gas cutoff seems to be working OK and I don't believe that the engine runs too hot although the temp gauge doesn't work. Do you have any ideas? Thanks.............DY

I had to set my 50 so it would die when I pulled the throttle lever all the way back. That stopped the dieseling.

My 630 will diesel and even turn backwards if I just shut the switch off after it's warmed up good.

I've learned that I can shut it off and at the same time push the throttle wide open, and it will never diesel if I do that.

A diesel engine doesn't require spark plugs to ignite the mixture in the cylinders. Normally turning off the ignition on a gasoline engine is enough to stop it. But sometimes that doesn't work and the engine continues to fire slowly for up to a minute before finally giving up. That condition is called dieseling.

Could be carbon buildup in the cylinders. Take the plugs out and look in with a flashlight.
Carbon can get hot and glow and make one run after shut off.
We used to pour kerosene in the intake just ahead up the carberator slowly and keep it running pretty fast.
Then pour enough in to stall the engine and shut off the switch and walk away. Crank it up the next day and watch out for all the black crap that will come out of the exhaust. You will need to wash off the tractor and yourself after doing this, but it will really clean all the carbon out.

It is referred to as run on or dieseling, it is real bad on things and will break them, so correct it.

Best way is to slow idle down so that last click on the throttle is too slow to keep running, bet it will not run on then.

One question......??

Have you put an Alternator on the tractor recently??

If so, you may need to install a Diode at the Alternator, to prevent "Feed-back" if you shut it off at anything above a SLOW idle...

We ALWAYS just killed our 2 ( they have Mags)....

Put it in high gear, at idle and hold the brakes and kill the engine...then SHUT the Gas off..!!

The most common culprit is late ignition timing. Second is idling too fast before shut down. Unless they grew up on them and ran exclusively Deeres back in the fifties and earlier many folks don't know how to run an old two banger. They run slow. Many times I have seen someone shut one down with the throttle still half open because they aren't accustomed to running an engine that slow.

Thanks Papa, I have received several suggestions and thank you for yours. My 60 still has a generator............Dy
