1010 Hydraulic Pump Leak

First - no "I told you so" or 1010 bashing.

Got my first major issue with the 1010 I bought last fall. Last night after cultivating using the JD S1-A cultivator set up, dual hydraulics working independently, I started to get a fairly good drip out of the bottom of the transmission case which was still dripping this morning. There is a cotter pin there in a weep hole. When I did fluid changes last fall I put Hy-Guard in the hydraulic system so I am positive it is not engine or transmission oil. No leaks outside the tractor or visible on the pump. Looking at the parts break out only thing I can think of is the seal , parts key 17, is on its way out? How hard is it to rebuild this pump? I have been into a M series pump before and this doesn't look too far off. Figure if I have it all apart I might as well do a full rebuild.

This was the first time I had seriously used the cultivators and the first time I had used the dual lift on this machine. No leaks or problems before and it worked fine and the 1010 plowed 2 acres with a 415 2 bottom plow this spring.

You cannot "rebuild" a gear-pump. Often you can reseal it though. I have not looked close at one of those 1010 pumps in years. Is it a Cessna or Webster-Electric? Early 1010s used Websters and seal-kits are very hard to find. Last time I needed one, Deere did a obsolete parts search and found me a kit on the shelf of a dealer in Georgia and he charged me near $100 for it. 9, 10, 11, and 12 make up a bronze thrust plate and spider gasket. When those parts wear or blow, oil gets forced out that little shaft seal. So to patch up a pump, you must have a good plate and spider gasket. If the two shafts that hold the gears have side-motion and the outer housing is scored, there is no fix to it. When I fixed my Webster-Electric pump in my 1960 1010, the metal parts were all like new. I just needed a seal kit.

Mine is a 1961, serial number in the middle of 258XX. I can't remember off the top of my head. Deere shows parts as available for the one I pictured, which is within my serial number break. JDParts says 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 & 14 are all available still along with 16, 17 & 20. Total for all those parts was around $105. I will have to check and see what pump but if Deere has the parts available I am guessing it must be a Cessna.

If they are not smooth and you took off too much would the gears start binding/rubbing on 4 because the gear is fixed on the shaft? NO issues with the lift working well, staying up, etc.

When a pump gets so worn there is no resealing it - it usually means the shafts and bushings are worn, and the gears are pushing out sideways and chewing up the housing. The actual high-pressure oil sealing is not done with the oil-seal on the outside of the pump. That is just a residual oil and dust seal. High pressure sealing is done by the front gear face against a metal thrust plate with a spider-gasket behind it.

I am going to hope I can reseal it without the gears being the issue. Only other option then is try to find a good used replacement I am guessing?

It is a generic pump so new replacements are usually easy to find. Not cheap though. You just have to figure out what size it is (cubic inches per revolution). Then figure if for clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation, what size shaft with spline count, and which two-bolt SAE mount. I am guessing, but I suspect is has an SAE A two-bolt mount, is 1.5 cubic inches per rev, and has a 5/8" splined shaft with 9 splines? If so, that is fairly common.

If you had a 1010 with power-steering, the pump is much harder to get new. I assume you have manual steering.

Switching it to dual shouldn't have caused any issues. I had to replace all the gaskets in my hydraulic system and while I was in there I learned that the switch is independent of the pump. Where exactly is the oil leaking out of? Is it running down into the clutch housing or is it being forced out where the pump bolts into the adapter? I've got a spare pump I got off an RU but I don't know if it works or not.

It is running out the weep hole in the bottom of the case just about beneath the pump. No signs of oil leaking on the pump itself. I ran it again last night just to see if it would leak more/worse. No leak. Ended up doing half an hour of cultivating with it. No dripping and everything worked fine. I cannot pinpoint what is up with it.

It is a Cessna pump, confirmed that last night however without tearing into I am not sure if it is 9 or 10 spline. Looking around online it seems there was a 9 and 10 spline 5/8 that was around 1.5 to 1.54. It looks like they can be found from a few places but no cost. The drip had stopped by the time I got home last night. Ran the tractor again for half an hour with no issues and this time no leak. No leak again as of this morning. I am stumped.
