2555 hi low

The hi low doesn't want to shift correctly from low to high on the first shift of the day acts like it not shifting after that it works good all day. My question is it about to go south. The clutch slave cylinder just went out,so if it needs clutch, 2 speed and few other things it may not be worth fixing. Any thoughts or advice welcome. Thanks

Not a long time I keep up with service very well. The problem now is can't
drive it at all due to clutch slave completely out. It has 6000 hours needs
clutch,4 tires, cab interior and maby hi low addressed. Fix all that and I still
have aged out tractor with dry clutch for hay loader work. Thinking about
replacing with a 5085m , any thoughts on 5085m

Unless you buy the JD 5085M with the hydraulic reverser you will still have a dry clutch. You asked in another post about a Hi-Lo on the JD 5085M,I stand corrected in that the Power Reverser Plus does have a push button Hi-Lo.. You have four transmission choices: 1) 12F/4R manual shift with the speed shift synchronized. All shifts require using the foot clutch. Foot clutch is dry. 2) 16F/16R with a shuttle shift that you clutch for. You have the two shifters to chose your speed and a shuttle lever for direction changes with using the foot clutch. This has a dry clutch too. 3)16/16 power reverser. You can change direction by moving the reverser lever without using the foot clutch. You also get a wet clutch with this option. 4) The 34F/16R Power reverser PLUS transmission has a hydraulic Hi-Low and wet clutch. This would be what I would want for a loader tractor myself.

6000 hours is not that many hours on a JD 2555 but your repairs are not going to be cheap. I would bet that you have a seal ring in the Hi-Lo going bad and that is letting the oil leak out when it sets. So the first shift has to fill the piston with oil before it works. It is leaking slowly so while your using it you do not notice anything wrong. IF you stop now and the housings are OK in your Hi-Lo the repair cost is not too bad. IF the housings are ruined you looking at around $4K just for the Hi-Lo parts to fix it. Also finding good used Hi-Lo housings is about impossible too.

Yes I am looking at new 5085m with 16 speed with power reverse loader 2 remotes economy pto air ride seat Firestone tires not a lot of up grades but enough. Will this tractor preform better than the 2555 Thanks

The problem with a newer tractor is all the electronics that come with it, plus the DEF fluid (I'm assuming the 5085 is a new model). I have the hi-low in my 1640; it works great but if it fails I'll spend the money to fix it to keep a tractor I can work on.

I think you will like it. The tractor is a simpler design than the JD 2555. They seem to have fewer complicated problems.
