Another 4020d 24v to 12v conversion question

I noticed the kits come with a separate starter relay other than the one mounted on the starter. Will someone explain why it is necessary. I'm sure it is necessary but with my limited electrical knowledge I do not know why.

My other 12v diesels do not have an extra starter relay. They only have the one mounted on the starter itself.

Thanks
Steve

The 12 volt solenoid takes more amperage than the 24 volt solenoid. Without the relay, the original switch, wiring and neutral safety switch would be overloaded as well as cause a lot of voltage drop.

Wiring between added relay & "S" terminal is generally shorter & heavier gauge than factory wiring plus electricity on this same wire doesn't pass through the neutral start switch but activation wire for relay from ign switch to relay still routed through NS switch if wired correctly.

It is needed. I worked on one yesterday that did not have one added. Adding it sure helped but I think the starter will still soon be going to the shop. Tom

JD also offered a kit to install starter relay on utility tractors built from '65-'82?)
