EARLY 4020 HEADLIGHT ISSUES

I have a 64' gas Powershift with dual headlights on the fenders. this tractor is a one owner with approx. 2000hrs and has not been touched (wiring, or anything) with that said I know the wiring is original . I can only get the outside headlights to turn on . when they come on they are bright and I can turn it one more click and they will become dim. my question is do these other lights not come on all together??? my 72' powershift only has one light but has the switch on the floor for the dual beams for HI/Lo..
Thanks,
Shawn

There are 2 circuits to the lights powered with a green and a yellow wire pull the dash and see if you have power at the switch on those 2 wires to start with if you do the problem is between there and the lights,, there is a plug to the lower part of that panel that can get bad check there,, also there are 2 wires feeding the light switch labeled "batt A" and "batt B" be sure you have power on both of them, it could be a little rust in a plug. but see what you have and don't have from each end.

Tim, being the original poster said his tractor is a gas model, it's not likely it has an "A" and "B" circuit, is it? Perhaps you are thinking diesel. Mike

Do these lights uae chassis return or are they hard wired? If they use chassis return, the problem could be rust/dirt/corrosion between the light body and the fender. Rust/dirt/corrosion is a common problem on 2 cylinder models with chassis return.

Early 4020 with gasoline engine up to serial number 091,000 utilizes a AR28401 while diesel utilizes a AR28402 light switch.

My guess for non-working headlamps is there's a loose connection on switch or switch is bad.

I would suggest you investigate the switch connections, but also the large plug located in the harness behind the lower dash panel. The plugs can work loose with time, and give poor connection. I have used a plastic zip tie in the past to hold those plugs together with good success.

The diesel switch has a 50 ohm resistor for the GEN light. The GEN light is a 12 volt bulb in a 24 volt circuit. Without the resistor, 24 volts would burn out the 12 volt bulb.

(quoted from post at 19:45:23 06/10/17) The diesel switch has a 50 ohm resistor for the GEN light. The GEN light is a 12 volt bulb in a 24 volt circuit. Without the resistor, 24 volts would burn out the 12 volt bulb.

May I ask why you're explaining about the diesel 24 volt switch in a thread that originally started about a GASOLINE model 4020 that would only have a 12 volt electrical system???????

FYI the resistor on the 24 volt light switch isn't for the gen.(idiot) light but the resistor for gen light is key 5(R39550).
