John Deere 2840 Steering Repair

I am working on the power steering on our 2840. I'm looking for a little advise from the other poor individuals that have had to deal with these lemon tractors. So the unit gets much hotter than other hyd components which points to internal leakage along with a hesitation or click of sorts when the steering is turned. It only does that when the tractor is running-nothing with tractor off and manually turning the steering. A few times the steering has gone fully to the left on its own, but not very often(this is not very handy when mowing road ditches). No external leakeage other than just recently the side cover with the bushing for the pitman shaft started to seep. Hoping new seals in the bottom piston will fix that.

So is my thinking correct that one of the two valves in the column could be causing this? Or could this all be from one of the 6 internal o-rings leaking? Two of the six orings were darker in color than the others, I assume from getting hot with the bypassing oil. I have a tech manual ordered but hasn't arrived yet. Was going to wait until I had the manual our hay is withering away due to this drought and am going to have to get it cut very soon. Sorry for the long post & Thanks in advance. Adam

Steering problem could be faulty steering valve spool body or valve is shimmed incorrectly. I agree with b&d that all o-rings & seals should be replaced while disassembled. I learned to hate 2840's when I sold them. It surprises me when I hear a 2840 is still operational.

Thanks for the responses guys. I agree on all new seals/o-rings. B&D oil baths of that kind are never a good time! TxJim our 2840
was used hard with a loader by previous owner., so probably is a ticking time bomb now. When dad and grandpa bought it in the late 90's it was replacing a tired 1550 Oliver so seemed like a good idea then. The steering column has been taken apart before given all the pipe wrench marks on the spanner wrench nuts so makes me wonder if it was shimmed wrong or if someone just took a chance on it being just the orings. I guess I will have to wait for the tech manual. Thanks Adam
