4020 PTO Leak

Have a slow leak around PTO stub shaft on a '71 4020 Syncro. Pulled stub shaft out and replaced O-Ring. Still seems to have same leak/drip. Wondering what next step should be? I see an oil seal located behind the rear bearing quill in parts manual. If problem, will this seal come off with the quill? Do I have to drain oil out to take quill off or will raising rear end keep oil in? Appreciate any help....never been into the PTO on one.

PTO seal can be replaced by removing quill from tractor & then removing brg & seal from quill. You're correct in the fact that hyd oil must be drained or tractor frt end nosed off in ditch or over terrace(berm) to limit lose of oil

Thanks for help! Just checking..... is there only 1 O-Ring or 2 that seal around stub shaft? I only saw one when quickly trying to replace because of leaking oil with stub shaft out. The parts manual says 2 are used but only shows 1 in the picture.

You will find that where the seal rides on the seal surface there will be a groove worn in,,a new seal will last a short while,, the spacer needs to be changed for a good fix..

(quoted from post at 12:14:49 06/09/17) Is the spacer just a press fit into the quill? I know that piece is not cheap!!

No, there is a lock ring, part 23 in previous picture from Tim s, that holds it in. And I can attest to that needs replaced if you can feel anything for a groove in it where the seal rides.
