adjust JD D valves

Turn the flywheel until all tappets are loose, just before left-hand exhaust valve opens. Tighten the adjusting screws until there is no shake in the levers. Back off the adjusting screws 1/2 turn, tighten your clamps. You're good to go.

I always heard it was one flat to back off with, not 1/2 turn which would be 3 flats. A little math has me convinced your 1/2 turn is proper though, at 25 TPI, a half turn is .020 exactly. So 3/8 and 5/16 fine are both 24 TPI and that minor difference amounts to .0008 added to .020 for one half turn and that's very close enough. At zero lash point pushrod will quit spinning freely with fingers if that's easier to work with. And far too many don't know of the one spot in 720 degrees of crankshaft rotation to adjust all valves at once deal, thanks for keeping that method and information alive. Entire method is found in a JD service manual too, but I forget which one.
