#5 Outer Shoe

Broke the outer shoe this weekend while mowing, the grass board dropped down and while backing up it broke the shoe. Previous posts mention David from Kansas I believe it was for parts. The number in my manual, which is very old, is Z532H.
Any one have on for sale with a good ledger plate?

Installing an outer shoe ledger plate is a job and a half, I have been trying for years to find a better way of doing it...and I would pay to see it done at the factory...

Tim, I can't speak for the Deere mower, but I drilled through the top of the outer shoe on my NH mower, directly above the ledger plate rivets. That lets me clamp a pin punch in my vise to back up the countersunk head of the rivet. It still takes three or four hands to hold everything in position.

That's obviously not how the factory does it, and I too would like to watch someone who does it for a living every day.

Now if I could only find a similarly easy way to back up the head ledger plate rivets.

I gave up on those expensive rivets years ago.

Followed the directions in the [b:654c4848f0]350 And 450 Mowers[/b:654c4848f0] operator's manual under [b:654c4848f0]REPLACING PLATE ON OUTER SHOE[/b:654c4848f0] on page 55, but with not much success.

Now use nuts and bolts for the ledger plate in the outer shoe.

The tops of the bevel head bolts can be "filed" down if necessary.

Do not remember if lock nuts were used.

Have not lost a ledger plate with the nuts and bolts.

Hope this helps.

Yes, David is a very good source for No. 5 mower parts.

We have bought many parts from him for our No. 5 mowers.

He is a good fellow to work with.

Might be too much information, but hope that it helps you find <a href="http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=john+deere+sickle+mower&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xjohn+deere+sickle+mower+outer+shoe.TRS0&_nkw=john+deere+sickle+mower+outer+shoe&_sacat=0">an outer shoe</a>.

Ditto Tim! I enjoyed working on the No. 5 mower I had EXCEPT for the ledger plate. I had a friend helping who is a fabrication genius and still we struggled for an afternoon.
