3010 Clutch

I bought a reman clutch for my JD 3010. The kit I bought came with the three bearings. I put the bearings in no problem but when I went to put the clutch into the flywheel the six holes in the cover did not line up with the six holes in the flywheel. It slipped onto the pins OK and into the flywheel but the holes were about an inch off. It took 5 weeks for the kit to come from the after market parts outfit so I arranged to send it back and have ordered one from mother Deere. I asked the parts guy at Deere if there was a serial number break that we needed to be careful of when he ordered mine and he said "Nope, we should be all set."

Any thoughts on why that clutch was off like that? I did try turning it 1/3rd of a rotation and slipping it back onto the pins in case it only went one way (actually tried that several times). And I imagine you guys know this but I was surprised that Deere is offering "alternative parts". The "alternative" clutch I have coming from them is about half the cost of the one from Deere itself.

I'm not sure it's possible to assemble wrong like that ?? Are you sure your lining it up correctly??

Tim, as you know, there are three pins in the flywheel that the clutch slides onto. The clutch I was sent fit on those pins OK and slid into the flywheel but then those six holes did not line up. The last time, many years ago, I did the clutch I got a reman from mother Deere and had no problem so I was kicking myself that there must have been a serial number break that I missed when I ordered this one. But the parts guy at Deere did not act like there was one. Lord knows I goof often enough but I stood there looking at that clutch and flywheel and puzzed and puzzed until my puzzler was sore and could not see anyway to put it together differently that was possible or would help. I was hoping someone would say "Oh yeah, that is a clutch from a 2510 (or something). Close but no cigar" But if it is not ringing any bells with you it may just be a mystery?

I have 3 or 4 of them laying here I will see if it is possible to set them up wrong,, there is no serial number difference, and I have installed a couple semi loads of them from several different suppliers,,and I have not seen this ...and I'm not doubting you dilemma..

I thought about taking the two clutches I had on the bench, my worn one and the reman. Take them apart to end up with one rebuilt one that would fit but was afraid I would wind up in over my head and then couldn't return the pieces. As I get older I do get a little more cautious about taking things apart!

It will jump at you when you undo the lever nuts,,then you will need a series of different length bolts to re-capture the springs...

Imagining recapturing the springs I see myself hunting around the shop, looking for them in the corners. This morning I did look at the clutch cover for a part number. No luck on either the new, won't fit one or the older, worn one.
