black smoke

I thought in general terms white smoke in your exhaust is water and blue oil.
Our 2005 6x4 Gator just started emitting black smoke out the exhaust.
Sounds good and runs fine but now it's smoking. We normally let it get pretty hot when we run it.
Rings or valves or something else?

Black smoke equals running rich so air cleaner maybe needing to be replaced or the choke is sticking if it has one or maybe a sticking float in the carb or other such carb problems

When I see excess BLACK smoke out the stack that tells me your running over rich. My first suspects are dirty clogged air filters or air inlet piping/plumbing or a partly closed choke followed by the power adjustment screw on the carb (if it has one, later models don't) which may be screwed out too far IE too rich. If left that way the plug will black carbon foul. Excessive out of time might cause some black smoke. Check the air filter and inlet piping and insure the choke is fully opening and see if theres any carb power adjustments that need leaned and check timing.
