60 with 45 loader new toy questions

Long story short, I just got a new toy, a 1953 60 with a 45 loader. It runs a little rough, and one rear tire won't hold air for more then about 5 minutes, but it's not in too bad of shape. The only mechanical issue I've noticed so far is the live PTO is stuck ON at all times unless I disconnect it with the small lever. Pulling on the PTO clutch only seems to make scary noises!

Until I get a few manuals:

What's the lifting capacity?

Does the loader have down pressure? I realized the cylinders are two way but were only hooked up for lift and I plan to make the proper connections to get it right. That should also solve my problem of having to severely overfill the hydraulics to get a full lift!

How hard would it be to find or fabricate the different bucket extensions, I'd definitely like a larger bucket when I finally get to put it to use.

How much of a pain is one with a trip bucket? Obviously a subjective question, I've just never had that kind of loader. I wish I could level the bucket at various heights but you get what you get!

If I get the bucket right how are they for light earthmoving? I imagine being unable to tilt the bucket would hurt it

I've unloaded 1200 lb bales from a trailer, but don't like doing it. It feels flimsy with that much weight on it. I make 600 lb bales and it easily handles them.

Not really good for down pressure. The other hoses are more for oil storage so you won't have to overfill it.

If you have a soil plate and sides on that bucket, it will hold about all the dirt you want to fool with.

A trip bucket is pretty fast for loading manure as it will re-set itself after you dump it. You learn to pick your battles with them.

The bucket trip has adjustments to level the bucket and make it cut better.

I like my trip handle on the left side instead of the right.

Looks like a nice loader and tractor.

You can add a hydraulic dump to it. Parts manual is on the JD website and shows the parts to give you some ideas.

PTO might need oil or adjustment.

Those cylinders only have the packings inside made for one way operation.
But on that model of tractor you need to use both hoses so as to hold enough oil to work right.
I used one of those for years for lifting and moving things around. Went from a 3 pt. boom to a 45 loader than got a 4020 with a 158 loader which is very hard to beat !

On the pto problem I guess I'd start by looking at the adjustment and see if you can get it to disengage.

The #45 loader can be handy and useful, if used within reason. Owners manual said 1,000# lift capacity, if my memory is correct. I use #45 on both "B" and 520. Your pictures fun to see. Thanks for posting them.

I have a 45 loader on my 48' B and it works pretty well for its age (mine does not reset itself though, but I guess we can chalk that up to improper adjustment or wear). I have used it frequently for loading mushroom soil and it does the job. Pretty sturdy compared to other loaders of the same vintage I'd say because I have lifted some pretty big logs with it. If that 60 has live hydraulics it should work nice and I would run the loader out of the side pipe plugs of the powr-trol instead of the coupler plugs in the front. I am not sure why but I have heard it returns oil to the reservoir quicker this way. Let me know how you make out if you decide to alter it to hydraulic tilt because I would be interested in doing that to mine. As others have suggested, the pto problem could be maladjustment or wear. I believe the operator's manual for the 60 has a section on PTO clutch adjustment that might pertain to your case.

Best of luck,

Pete

Brandon,

Sure looks like you got a good one, never seen mine raise that high. I have several manuals, one operators manual says rated lift capacity is 2150 lbs and lift height is 10-1/2 ft. Looks like your getting every bit of that. Also have a 45W that I have on a 50 that has power trol problems currently. Had to take the other 45 off my 70D until I fix the flywheel problem. The 70 D was plumbed like your 60 which worked OK. You will be surprised how much it will lift. Like the extra supports you have on the rear axel. Every time I see extra parts I buy them, usually for scrap price. Currently only need the boom to have a complete set of options for the 45 loader. Yes I believe the snow (utility) bucket could be fabricated.

Dan - What is the story on the front wheels on your 70? Are they original? They look good!

Pete, they won't reset with the soil plate on - it messes up the balance, but if you are loading manure with just the tines, they will reset. The loaded bucket makes it drop fast and gives it the rebound it needs. You can encourage it a little by dropping the loader just a little bit as the bucket is swinging back up. After a little practice you don't even have to think about it.

Change the oil in the pto, trans gear oil can leak into the pto and cause it to drag. Use hydraulic fluid that you are using in the loader hydraulics. Book says to use engine oil like 30w.

Thank you everybody for the great info, it sounds like it will be a great loader to have. Hopefully I can get the issues figured out and get to work with it!

I will see if that PTO is full of gear oil, that is a good point!

Be a little careful if you put a big bucket on that loader. Those pipe frames break easy. I never could figure out how to run the clutch, hydraulic lever and steer all at the same time with those things.

Thanks Dan,

I got mine to lift high by adding oil and raising, then adding oil and raising. Before that it would only lift as high as the hood! Ended up putting in too much LOL

What's wrong with your Powr Trol?
