Power Trol not working on '49 A

Guys, another question, did a search but couldn't find what I needed.

On my 1949 A my power trol isn't working. When I engauge it up or down, it will move just a little bit once then nothing. I hear and feel the pump underneath working but that's it. I changed the oil today to make sure that levels weren't the cause of the issue. Any thoughts or what to check out?

Thanks very much for your time.

You need weight on the rockshaft to make it go down, or a large pipewrench and a piece of pipe to force it down.

If I recall,,,,With pto engaged lifting upward is with hydraulics, lowering is gravity.. No down pressure. Use a wrench to rotate the arms downward and raise using the lever and see what you get. Be sure it has enough oil...or you may have a bad cylinder piston cup ? You can rebuild it, but they are heavy and two persons are best.

Reason I asked about maybe a new to you tractor-
Are the "plugs" (can't remember the right name) for rockshaft operation installed and locked in? If you've used the rockshaft in the past, then this would not be the problem.
It's been over 35 years since I used the rockshaft on mine, so I'm a little rusty on that.

It's a new to me tractor so the issue definitely could be on my end. I bought the tractor 15 years ago at an auction but have been letting a friend of mine use it. He didn't use the power trol.

I'm going to get a 3pt hitch for it. I'll get it on, put some weight on it and then see what happens. I have both the operators and shop manual for it. The operator's manual is pretty good but I wish it went into more detail like talking about the adjustments you can make.

Thanks for the help as always!

If the tractor is new to you--you do realize that the PTO must be in gear and the clutch must be engaged in order for it to work, right?
Not trying to put you down or anything, but just making sure. Sometimes it's the simple stuff that gets you.

First on the A yes check fluid takes about 6qts. Next put pto in gear AND ENGUAGE CLUTCH move hyd lever ahead to raise it if nothing happens you got deeper issues. As others said put a pipe wrench on it to lower or rotate the shaft backward or down.

Just adding on to what others have said. In most cases, you will need dummy plugs installed in powr-trol in order to use rockshaft. If you have hydraulic couplers out the rear of the powr-trol, the rock shaft will not move.

Note the oil plug (Key 9).

Take a look at the photo below of the oil plug on ?Old John? Nancy's 48A.

Check both oil plugs on your tractor to make sure they are like the one shown above.

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]POWERSHAFT[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the powershaft lever (Key 58).

Take a look at the photo below of the powershaft lever.

Check to make sure that the powershaft lever is engaged as shown above.

The Powr-Trol will not operate unless the powershaft lever is engaged.

Start the tractor.

Put the transmission in neutral.

Engage the clutch.

Move the Powr-Trol lever forward to raise the rockshaft.

Move the Powr-Trol lever backward to lower the rockshaft.

Hope this helps.
