Model A year and serial number range?

Fellas,

Going to do some work on my A and want to dial in the year and serial number.

First, I believe it's around a 1949, do you agree (see picture below)? It's 12v with the battery box under the seat.

Also, the serial number plate is gone but stamped on the main case is A3290R which I believe started with serial number 58400.

I'd like to just get the serial number range and approximate year for parts ordering.

Thanks very much!

48/49 Model A none rollamatic front end . If has single shifter might be a late 49..

Does it have the HI-Lo, shifter, or are there 6 individual gears? That change was made at 648000, usually considered the start of "1950" models.

If the paint on yours is original- almost looks like it might be- then the decals would indicate it is a later '47 to '49 model. Those had the "john Deere" centered on the hood. Starting about 1950, the "john Deere"" decal was moved forward, so that the edge of it was about an inch and a half back from the joint of hood and grill. Pictures of our A, 648122, show the decal in this later position when it was new.

Is that a dealer decal on the back of the hood? Can you send more pics? That is a nice, straight looking A.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts.

It actually has a high low shifter and 6 gears. I'm 99% sure it's original paint but newer decals put on her. You can't tell from this picture but the "John Deere" stick is actually placed more to the right side the then original. The original John Deere started about 5" to the left of it's current placement.

The small circular decal on the left of the hood is about it's pistons and not a dealer decal, I just forget exactly what it says.

Mine is 671111. Side decals on the hood are farther forward. and it doesn't have the bulge in the front frame at the spark plug area. The A decal has been painted over.

Yours has the 4 round holes in the rear centers, too... I always wondered when that started, seemed about like about 1951...

Your serial number range will be 584,000-647,999. I'm sure there were a few somewhat minor changes during that era (1947-1950), but the major components will be the same.

I'll try to attach a couple pics of my 1949 A, sn 638xxx.
I painted it in 2004. Not perfect, but good enuf for me. First time I ever tore down a tractor and repainted it- and last time.
Still use it with sickle mower.
Should give you pretty good idea of what a 49 looks like. Any questions, ask away.

Pics are too big to attach, I guess. Shoot me an email and I'll send you some pics of my A for comparison.

Thanks guys for all the input and great pics too! With your help, I think we've dialed in the year and serial number range.

Thanks again!
