The PTO on my 2010 JD works, but does not engage slowly. It acts like an over-camming device. If you engage it, it starts so fast that it will break things and shear pins. Any ideas how I can fix it without a major tear down?
 
Those are a strange set up,, but I remember that the roll pin hole in the handle would get "egged" out and make this worse,,check that out, we use to drill it out to a bigger pin..
 
Adding to tim s comment. It's not hard with the right information and tools ( lift/chain fall). You will need to remove the rock-shaft cover to fix the problem. I know you do not want to spend extra money, but an original JD 2010 manual or copy of it, IMHO is a must in this repair. IT manuals leave too much out, like be sure you unbolt the oil supply line to the rock-shaft before removing the cover. You will find it hidden under the cover under the seat.. it's attached under the Rt side of the cover with two 3/8 cap screws.

There is not much you can do with it. The PTO engagement mechanism is one of a kind and is complicated.

The PTO clutch is always engaged, when you start to pull the lever forwards it disengages the clutch and slides a collar on to the drive gear to couple the PTO pack to the PTO Clutch and then it releases the PLTO clutch.

There is a an adjusting screw for the timing of the linkage to engage the PTO. You can access this from the rear of the tractor, but you MUST have a JD service manual to do this.

Even with adjusting the PTO, it is limited what you will achieve. Some grinding is normal and the sudden engagement is also normal.
