A and over-riding PTO on 38 Mower

I have a '49 A, and a #38 sickle mower (semi-mounted). I bought an over-riding PTO clutch this winter, so I put it on the A, for obvious reasons, after many years of using it without the over-ride.
The mower mounting bracket on the A is slid back on the drawbar support as far as it will go. With the over-ride on the PTO stub, the mower's PTO shaft is 5" too long to even hook up, let alone have room for flex over uneven ground.
I could cut the pto shaft shorter, but I also have a 60 that I can put the mower on, and if I cut the shaft, it will be too short to use on the 60, and it's only about 12" long now, when pushed to shortest length.
Other option is to remake the mower mount (on the A) and extend it back further, but that will put the round mounting stubs 13" past the end of the drawbar support. Not sure if this will put too much stress on the bolts that hold the drawbar support up, or the casting that they bolt into. Figure I would have to put diagonal supports from the mower mount bracket up at an angle to the studs on the axle housing, to help hold up the mower mount bracket.

Am I missing something here as far as using an over-ride, without having to remake/modify either the PTO shaft or the mounts?
Any other options?

Thanks.

What problem(s) did you have without the over-riding pto clutch? I can't see a sickle bar mower generating enough momentum to cause problems like a rotary mower/bush hog can.

I had to cut off the PTO shaft on my brush cutting mower to use an over running clutch. Mine basically only extends the tractor PTO shaft maybe 4 inches, so if you are 5 inches short it may even be binding without the over running clutch. I think I only had to cut a couple inches off my PTO shaft on my mower.

Secondly, as Pete said, why are you adding an over running clutch to a sickle bar mower as they don't have the inertia that a brush cutting mower has. Many people have run sickle bar mowers for years without using one.

RE: Why
I use this for ditch tops, creek banks, and around the buildings where I don't run the lawn mowers or the Woods rotary mower. I usually run at a higher rpm in a lower gear in the tight quarters places, and pull up (closely) to posts and buildings. Have had the mower push me a little, but when stopping quickly, I think a quick stop is harder on the mower (pto, flywheel, etc) than the tractor.
So, I bought the over-ride (used) for $10, took it apart and cleaned it up, and want to use it if I can.
If I can't use it, I guess I can always get my money back out of the thing.

The 38 is the only PTO equipment I use on the A and/or the 60. The 38 is kind of a PITA to put on and take off, so I usually just leave it on the A, and use the 60 (power steering) for moving wagons around.
The rotary cutters (7' Woods 3 pt and 15' Woods batwing) get pulled by bigger tractors. Same with augers.
