4430 selective control valve leak from cap (31)

Have fluid leaking out from under cap near
turtle-rabbit adjustment arm on 1973 4430.

Pulled off cap and obtained new valve guide
o-rings(20); backup rings(21); o-ring(27);
backup ring(28); thrust washer(29);o-
ring(30); 6 packings for cap.

Have it all ready to install onto the
housing which is still on tractor.

QUESTION: Is there a procedure or technique
for installing? Doesn't seem like I have
enough hands.

Also, do you all tack down packing s and o-
ring 30 with a very thin film of some type
of adhesive?

Any guidance is appreciated.

Have a good day!

It's near Imposable to read install that captures while it's on the tractor,,gravity works too well..

Fellows,

Thanks for the input.

Kind of looked like one had to be part octopus to reinstall on tractor.

Sounds like y'all strongly recommend getting housing off tractor and to put cap on in a horizontal way.

QUESTION: By removing c clip from linkage, assume that removing housing will not change any scv adjustments.

Please let me know anything else you might think of that would help in the reassembly process.

I will go to john deere this week and get housing gasket.

Thank you much!

I just re read my post from yesterday, and it looks like spell check went off in a different direction... what I "meant" to say is,,It is near Impossible to re-install the SCV cover while it is on the tractor, the poppet caps will not stay in place even with the stickiest grease, you will need to remove the valve and put it in a vise with the cover pointing up and keep it as level as you can, then place the poppet caps centered up with the poppets, push down on the cover with even pressure and start the bolts,,tighten them down evenly, and make sure all is going into place,, the valve to rockshaft packing's can be re-used.. If you can't get it to work out,,send it to me and I will go through it and bench test it for you..

Tim S,

Thank you. It does help me.

Glad the housing to rockshaft housing gasket is reusable.

Will try to get home from work early one night to pull housing and try to install cap as shown in your picture.

Thanks so much!

Tim S,

On Friday pulled housing from tractor and reassembled slowly and evenly with everything in horizontal position. Seals and o-ring stayed in place with grease. No more leaks and tractor hydraulic operation seems normal.

Thank you very much!
