Starting to try and get the 2240 running. Cleaned fuel system and put in new engine oil. I am missing the positive battery cable and boy are they expensive. Can I put a battery charger to the solenoid to try and start this tractor?

$85 and not sure the tractor functions. It was parked 10+ years ago and no one knows why. Trying to spend very little on it until I at least know the engine runs and transmission works.

Even on 200 Amp 12 volt start it won't be enough?

And while you getting a new positive cable also get a new negative cable that goes from battery post to starter mounting bolt instead of attaching to rusty battery box

I would agree with ss55, jump to another vehicle if testing, leave it connected after starting, so the alternator has a load.

I never had much luck with jumper cables or chargers. The cables and clamps cannot handle the power needed to turn a starter.
Should be able to get cables made up at a tractor or truck dealer reasonable ? Or buy some ready made up universal ones you can always use them on another project if this one falls through.
Does that tractor have a hi-low or reverser option ? If so make DARN SURE you don't ever try and pull start it !

I would forget the factory one piece cable and just buy two positive cables and hook them both directly to the starter. The two cables will carry more amps than the factory double terminal cable. The original cables that had one connected under the bolt of the main cable where junk form day one. LOL. I also found skipping the short braded ground cables helped too. Ground the batteries to the block not the firewall makes them crank better too. I usually replace on of the starter mounting bolts with a longer one and ground two cables there.

You can buy premade cables at any parts store. Just get at least 1 gauge cables,00 are even better. You can buy four premade cables cheaper than the one factory cable from JD.

Based on your recommendation before Jim every other tractor
we have has 0 gauge ground cable to the starter mounting
bolt. Huge difference in starting power.

Don't go to tractor supply or any farm store for that.

Like other said, go to Carquest, Napa, bumper to Bumper etc... and get the grumpy girl or guy to make you those cables with soldered fittings and shrinked sleeve. Will look factory.
Go to the 0 gauge cables and terminals. At Carquest, you can get cables for same cheap ones in farm stores. But they sure look much better. Make sure orientation of the connectors is correct, you don't want them 180d off.

For a 4620, it cost me 120 for 4x 00 gauges cables, and those are long cables...
