2355 Synchronized Transmission

I have a 2355 4wd tractor in the shop that belongs to a friend of mine that does a lot of
spraying and bush hogging on very steep ground. He says the tractor has jumped out of low
range on him numerous times going down hill and asked me to fix it. I could not get it to do
this before disassembly. We have totally disassembled the transmission down to the bare
case and cannot find anything worn or broken. No worn shift rails-weak detent springs or
worn balls. Gears and shift collars look new. I am at a total loss where to go next.Have any of
you experienced this problem with this transmission or can anyone give me any pointers?
Thanks in advance.

Really check the shift collars out close. IF you have a new one to compare your used ones to may help too. I fraught a JD 3020 doing this and it turned out to be slight wear on one collar. The wear only measured a few thousands but it was a taper so it would jump under the right conditions.

I thought the same thing. The part I cannot seem to find out is how much total clearance there is suppose to be between the gears on each given shaft. The clearance seems excessive to me and there is no way to compensate for this clearance especially on the short low- reverse shaft. There is no visible wear that you can see on anything but the shift collar does seem to be a sloppy fit. I really hate to put this thing back together to have the same problem. We don't mind to buy new parts, we just don't know what to buy at this time.Thank you for any help or insight. I work on a lot of tractors but do not have a lot of experience with JD transmissions. My helper is an automatic transmission specialist, but this one has got him scratching his head too.

(quoted from post at 18:51:51 05/19/17) Jim the Hi-Low side is not synchronized. He says it's jumping out of Lo range only.

Sorry I overlooked where you stated it jumped out of low range. I agree with JD Seller to inspect shift collar.
