J.D model H gov gear

Can anyone explain the RIGHT way to press off the governor gears on a JD model H. What would even be better if anyone knows of a video showing it. A few places I've shown it to are afraid they'll break something... Any help would be appreciated... Thanks

What you need is the AA-2038-R Gear Puller and Driver Tool. I wish I had one - I reworked mine in our machine shop and was able to press the gears off and on without damage, but it was scary.

This is how the dealers did it "back in the day", and no power tools were necessary.

The parts of this tool set look simple enough that any machine shop should be able to make them, and if I ever go through another governor overhaul, I'm going to have a set made.....

Helps to take the snap rings out first. I learned that the hard way. Replaced the fan gears a long time ago and broke one before I noticed the snap rings. I put it in a lathe and turned the rest off then saw it. Had new gears so it didn't matter.

I have done MANY of those with just a cheap Harbor Freight 10 or 12 ton press. The tall version. I did have to modify it a bit to work right especially for fan shafts I had to put it up on blocks and get rid of the center brace and add 2 on the outsides. For the cross support you press against I use 2 heavy pieces of channel iron just supported onto the height adjusting pins. You have to be able to take one side off to slip the gov. in there and also it needed to be wider than factory cross support. The small gear that the cam drives is VERY FRAGILE so make sure you only support it as near to the shaft as you can.Nothing even near the edge ! IIRC I have an old bearing center cone I split so I can slip it in there and press against the gear. The Magneto drive coupling will have to come off by itself as there is another snap ring under there to remove before the fan gear and or bearing can come off. I use a bearing separator to remove the mag. coupling. Get the knife edges down on the lip the spring and washer seat against and tighten up the bearing separator. Then set it on the press plates and push the shaft down through the coupling. This is what has worked for me. But I'm sure there are no "right ways" I have found out some of the "wrong" ways as I have broken that fragile gear the cam drives before I learned a better way to do it.
