So my son has a 39 h that he dragged home from a scrapyard and we have it all apart and I was working on getting the right piston out of the block and I noticed a crack on the deck of the block up on the top coolant passage . should I try welding it and have it surfaced or look for a block ? Anyone have one for sale ?

They can be welded and are occasionally
available on ebay and from Sharps and others.
Cylinder condition is important.

I was going to weld it myself only thing is it's cracked across the deck so I am going to need to get it surfaced . I would rather deal with someone here I am not a big eBay guy.I think a different block might be better in the long run. Thanks .

(quoted from post at 05:22:52 05/17/17) Sounds like I'd look for another block. Or better yet a parts donor tractor.

+1 for a donor tractor. There will likely be other things come along that you will need parts for. Buying them one off and paying shipping adds up fast. You would be surprised how fast a donor tractor pays for itself. I am sure you already know, you will need to make sure the donor is also a 39 as that year had many different parts that the rest.

If it's just across cooling passages, with a passage on either side, I wouldn't worry about it. A picture would help.

Maybe better to find another H and use this one a donor?
Groove the crack. Heat the block to 500F in the wife's oven then weld the crack with stainless rod.

I might have to wait until the wife
is out of town to use the oven ! I
am going to try it this weekend ,
thank you

I got 39 H #4404 with small cracks in block. Try cleaning crack with fine wire brush, degrease, and put thin coat of red RTV on crack area when head gasket installed and it should be OK. Did mine 25 years ago and never leaked, tractor does not get run much and no hard use. Most used blocks will be cracked.
