JD 1040 - 6v or 12v?

Hi there everyone, I'm new to the forum but it seems like a very friendly and helpful community, so I will likely become a regular contributor/reader... I just purchased a JD 1040 with the understanding that it was a 12v system (I researched it on tractordata before purchasing and also asked the owner, who was admittedly not that mechanically inclined...) unfortunately I didn't spend a whole lot of time looking at the batteries when purchasing it, however when I got it home I noticed it's actually 2 6v batteries wired in parallel, so it's actually wired 6v, not 12v. Could it be that they are running a 12v tractor on 6v? or is it more likely that tractordata is wrong and it actually is a 6v system? What's the easiest way to tell whether it's supposed to be running 6v or 12v config?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

C.

Welcome to YT
JD 1040 has a 12 volt electrical system. Are you sure batteries are 6 volts. How many electrolyte filler holes does batteries(3 or 6) have if not maintenance free type batteries?

I actually confirmed myself tonight that the batteries are indeed 12v. Interestingly, they are maintenance free batteries (no caps so can't
tell visibly that they aren't 6v) and there's no label on the batteries to indicate 12v or 6v. I had to call Canadian Tire with the part
number on the batteries to confirm with the parts department that they are actually 12v! Not sure why the previous owner thought they are
6v... I feel a bit stupid taking her word for it, guess I'll look closer next time.

Anyway, yes they are 2 12v batteries wired in parallel. Can anyone tell me why the need for 2 batteries on such a small engine? is it just to
have the extra reserve capacity?

Actually engine will start with 1 good 900-1000 CCA battery when ambient temp is above 40-50 °F if frt hyd pump is going out of stroke. 2 batteries is for starting in Winter temps a& for turning hyd pump when in stroke.
