JD 8760 Help...Tim

Have a 8760 with 24 speed trans that's down right now. It's giving us fits trying to find parts for. The shaft coming out of the 2-speed and female shaft that recieves it have stripped the splines. These shafts are NLA thru deere and instead they want to sell 10K or more worth of updates to the clutch, 2-speed, and trans gears. Curious if anyone has been thru this before and have a real solution or know the whereabouts of original parts. We have taken them to a couple machine shops but the price to have to have them made is almost as scary as deere's updates.

At one time JD had a 'fix as fail' program in place for earlier serial number 60 series tractors. This was for the two speed which had an out of spec piston....JD essentially extended the warranty for however long and if your tractor's two speed crapped-out two days after the fix as fail program ended it was too bad....

Anyhow...I've done several two speeds and a clutch or two in the 60 series tractors. I don't recall that parts were ever cheap.

As far as parts to fix a 24 speed that you don't want to update....just better start calling the boneyards. I've had fair success finding hard to obtain parts from 'All State Ag Parts' as they have scrap yards like from coast to coast to check inventory at.

I have not done much work on the 60's and 70's,,not going to be much help on this one....I pulled on transmission out of an 8760 that we had a few years back and we were Lucky enough that all it needed was to deal with the lower shift quadrant that the lock nut backed off ..

We have called several boneyards and they have checked the wire with not much luck. My mechanic says whenever someone does the updates, deere takes the old shafts in as cores, probably so they can destroy them.

The two shaft pieces are currently in dayton at a machine shop. May have to take elsewhere as their quote to make them was a bit steep. Originally they were going to build them up and just machine them but they are telling us the metal deere used for them is so cheap that it won't work. You'd think integral driveline components would be of the highest quality.

If it's a JD sanctioned/paid for update yes JD keeps warranty replaced and PIP(product improvement program) replaced parts. Just normal over the counter replacement parts updated or not are the owners scrap metal. Components parts like alternators, starters, water pumps etc do have core value but don't require you turn in a core...

It ain't like John Deere cares if you repair your old 4x4 tractor with scrap yard parts...it's more probable that any of that series tractors that make the bone yard get the major items bought-up and remanned....I bet you can buy a remanufactured transmission from the JD dealership!

That old saying, when in doubt, build it stout, must not be in effect at the John Deere factory any more, when they built the old 2 cylinders, it was stout, and i know it's just not Deere and Co.that done it over the years!

Do I ever know what you are going through. My two speed stripped out the clutch packs
and damaged the shafts and drums. With Tim's help I tried all the used parts yards that we
knew. Several shipped me parts worse that what I was trying to replace. Deere wanted
$10,000 plus for new parts. Used parts still cost me over $5000; total bill right at
$13500. Good luck finding used parts and be careful to confirm if you have long shaft
or short shaft.

Yours must be an earlier serial number. The later ones all had those shafts updated while under warranty. I got the pleasure of doing 4-5 of them when I was still in the shop. The bigger question is how long do you plan to keep the tractor???? If your going to keep it for a long time I would NOT put used shafts and gears back into it. The used parts will fail in time as well. If your going to keep it then bite the bullet and put the updated NEW parts in it. I have not heard of any trouble out of the updated units.
